Beverley to York 2011

Beverley to York day 7, Sunday 30 October 2011.

I left Beverley at 9:50 on a cool sunny morning with moderate E ? SE winds. I decided to take the scenic route, the Top Beverley Road, instead of sticking to the main Great Southern Highway. I had done this road before but didn’t remember the big hills that confront one heading north. Maybe this is because I am older and my current bike hasn’t the really easy gear that I had on the bike that I would have used before.

I had to walk up much of the first hill, then there was steep downhill rush, then another stiff climb with some walking. I didn’t really mind because there were good views from the top of these hills and I hadn’t far to go this day. After that it was a more steady up and down. I rested at 435 and reached the York Motel at 448.

The day was quite warm now. I was a bit early to check into the motel so they told me to come back in half an hour. I rode into town to check out the shops and find a paper, and somewhere to place bets for the Melbourne Cup. The IGA was open but all the shops that sold a Sunday paper had run out. I got some pies and cakes for dinner and breakfast in the IGA. I found a pub that had touch-screen betting machines and, with limited information on horses, jockeys and so on I placed my bets. York is a popular place to go on a sunny Sunday and the main street was full of local and overseas visitors.

I got back to the motel just as he was driving out on some errand. He backed up, said ‘good timing’ and checked me in. The unit was $100 which included a light breakfast, and it had a microwave.

It was warm and sunny with a dry easterly, and there was a rotary hoist with pegs so I took the opportunity to do some extra washing before having my rest. After that I did the rest of the washing and hung that up, then set off to walk around the town. I could see what looked like the spire of an impressive church peeping over the top of some trees, and resolved to find it. But I headed east to start with.

I walked over the bridge, then across the park and back over the swing bridge, passing the Anglican church. This was faithfully rebuilt from the design of the original convict-built one which had deteriorated and been demolished. Boys were having fun charging over the shaking bridge on their BMX bikes.

I found the Catholic church, it was impressive. It reminded me of Ely Cathedral in England. I took a lot of images inside and out. The area around it reminded me of a cathedral close in England, with a park and old church and other buildings around.

I got back to the motel in time to get all my washing in, it was all dry. I settled down to watch TV and relax. I went to bed early because the next day would bring a ride of 60 km or more to Mundaring, it would be a warm day and there would be hills. I would also have an easterly tailwind which was good.

Reading at York, end of day: 450. Day’s ride: 32km.
Cumulative distance: 275km. Average km/ riding day: 46.
