Greenbushes to Donnybrook 1985


Greenbushes to Donnybrook, day 8, Friday 22 November 1985. I had a good breakfast in the dining room and eventually was ready to leave. My plan was just to go straight to Bunbury. I thought, it’s 77 km but much of it is downhill and then level, and I should be able to do it in time for the train. I didn’t get far before I realised that I had no strength, every turn of the pedals was an effort. I was going to have to stop another night, in Donnybrook. I laboured on, had a few rest stops and walked up a few hills until a run down the scarp into the town.

I was able to get booked into a unit in the motel, then had a rest before riding down into the town to shop. Riding is always easier than walking whatever shape you’re in. At this stage I got around to buying some arrowroot which is a well-known stopper. It would provide nutrition while stopping my problem. I took it back to my unit and made a porridge of it with sugar and hot water from the kettle. I thought it would be a good idea just to eat this and nothing else until I got home.

I had a swim and a nice hot shower and decided to rest some more. Then I started feeling hungry, and decided that since things had been quiet I could risk some fried rice, at least. I rode back down into town to get it. I enjoyed it but things became active again later, so I vowed just to have a lot of arrowroot and sugar for breakfast, and nothing else.

Back at the motel as evening drew on I decided to put my bike inside the unit. Unfortunately I was seen by the co-proprietor who ran over to yell at me about bikes not being allowed into units. This was silly and illogical so later when it was dark and they were inside for the night I sneaked the bike into the unit anyway.

I had a reasonable night.
