Manjimup to Greenbushes 1985

Manjimup to Greenbushes, day 7, Thursday 21 November 1985. I felt a bit better than I had the previous morning, but still had my problem after breakfast. I started on the road to Bridgetown, hoping that things would improve.

I stopped at Yornup to use the public phone and try to ring my parents. I usually rang them every couple of days on these rides because they worried. I hadn’t been able to get them for a few days – the phone was either engaged or they weren’t answering. I had only just got my answering machine, but few people did in those days and there was no 101 service. I couldn’t get them at Yornup so I pressed on.

When I reached Bridgetown after between two and three hours, with stops to rest, it was clear that another Episode was coming. I reached the library and council offices in the middle of town but the men’s facility was occupied. I had to get into the ladies. Country towns are mostly deserted during weekdays but it was just my luck that two women walked in while I was in there with the cubicle door locked. They tried to get in, couldn’t, stood there talking for a while, then started wondering who was in there and why ‘she’ was taking so long, and why ‘she’ didn’t speak. At last they gave it up and went away and I was able to escape.

I only had 17 km to go now, to get to Greenbushes but made hard work of it. I got to the hotel and thankfully checked into one of the units. I can’t remember whether I stayed in one of these units in 1983, or in one of the old rooms inside. I had to sit down for a while, of course. I remember staring at the square tiles on the floor and tracing patterns in them.
