Augusta to Cape Leeuwin and Margaret River 1981

February 17th, 2012

Augusta to Cape Leeuwin and Margaret River, day 4, Thursday 26 November 1981. As in 1980, I needed to visit Cape Leeuwin and have a swim at Flinders Bay, where two oceans meet.

I had an early breakfast so that I could leave most of the stuff in my room and get to the Cape, have a swim, come back and get ready and check out by 10 am. It was a nice sunny morning with a south-westerly which would help me up the Bussell Highway later. I assumed that the previous day could be put behind me and that things would go well from now on. I think I had some food in the room with me and ate it in bed before getting up.  … Read more

Augusta to Cape Leeuwin and Margaret River 1980

Augusta to Cape Leeuwin and Margaret River, day 4, Thursday 4 December 1980. Margaret River to Augusta, day 3, Wednesday 9 November 1988. Left Margaret River 7.48, headed down connecting road to Caves Road. Arrived Lake Cave 8.48 (14624). Saw the cave, always impressed by the depth you have to descend and by the huge trees growing out of the hole.

Left at 10.55, headed down Caves Road. Last time I went to Augusta this way, in 1980, there was 16km of unbikeable gravel starting 3km south of Lake Cave, ending finally in a stretch of unsealed but bikeable road before rejoining the bitumen somewhere near Jewel Cave turnoff. In 1988 the whole thing was sealed and there was no problem.

Reached Augusta Motel at 1.19. Got a unit overlooking the sea.

Dumped the luggage, just took essential spares and towel and set off to Flinders Lookout at Cape Leeuwin, for the traditional leap-year initial-carving in the brass plaque there.  ... Read more
