Clarkson to Lancelin Tour 2010, six days, cumulative distance: 285km.

I had not been to Lancelin for 16 years. Previous rides there in 1990 and 1994 had involved long runs, broken spokes, unrideable roads, cramp, bad weather and outdated or inaccurate maps. I planned to start at the extremity of the northern rail line and go to Lancelin, in easy stages of 40 to 50 km a day, staying in different places, then come back via Gingin and possibly Bindoon.

Neergabby to GinGin, day 5, Friday 29 October 2010. I was amazed on this cool sunny morning how the wind direction could change so much in less than a day. From yesterday’s fresh post-rain westerly I was expecting a light southerly tending west as the day wore on, but instead there was a fresh east-south-east wind. I had only about 30 km to travel on this day and it would have been easy to do it the previous day with that strong tail-wind, but I was glad to have stayed over in a new and interesting place.

There was no hurry this morning so I took another walk through the natural bush on the western side of the track, Chitna Road.  ... Read more

Gingin to Guildford, day 6, Saturday 30 October 2010. I left Gingin at 7:51 on a cool sunny morning with moderate E-NE winds. I rode up past the railway station and started the mainly downhill run to the Brand Highway, which I reached at 284. Brand highway is straight and flat, so that you can look back and forward a long way and see distant traffic reflected in the road as a mirage. It was easy to get into a rhythm cycling along and the lack of hills meant that I didn’t lose much energy. Hills take it out of you when you climb and you don’t get it back on the downhill run.

I rested at 294 and the road began to curve around to the east, into the wind, as I passed through Muchea, 305.  ... Read more

Lancelin to Gingin, day 4, Thursday 8 September 1994. Left the Lancelin Inn at 8:01. The winds had come around so rapidly since Tuesday afternoon that they were already North-East, but not too strong, so I expected (rightly as it turned out) that they would moderate and back around to the north later. This actually helped me, at least it did not hinder me.

I passed the Ledge Point turnoff at 43 and the Guilderton Turnoff at 50. It was clear by now, checking against the 5-km posts, that the new speedo was highly accurate and needed no correction. I came to the Gingin Road turnoff at 56. At last I would be riding on new road, the possible mental hardship of retracing the 45km struggled over on Tuesday was behind me.  ... Read more

Gingin to Cottesloe, day 5, Friday 9 September 1994. The day was sunny and mild with NE winds shifting NW later. I left the Gingin hotel at 8:34 and went down the hill and onto the Brand Highway. I didn’t stop for my first rest until one hour later, having done 22 km (127).

I went through Muchea and joined the Great Northern Highway at 134. I took further rests at 145 (opposite the Air Force base) and 159.

An easy and pleasant day’s ride ended, with this whole ride, at Midland railway station at 12:06, 171. I boarded the train that had just come in and went home to Cottesloe.

Reading at Midland: 171. Day’s ride: 66km. Aggregate: 330. Km/day: 66.  ... Read more

Midland to Gingin, day 1, Monday 29 October 1990. I left Midland rail terminal at 9:25 and went up the Great Northern Highway. Winds were strong from the side, sometimes with and sometimes against me. There was intermittent rain. I stopped for a drink at 19710. As I passed through Bullsbrook a Macchi Trainer passed so low over me that I could smell its exhaust. I rested again at 19724.

A shower of rain passed over the road but I missed the worst of it – most of the rain fell ahead of me, as I was to find splashing through puddles some time later. I turned on to the Brand Highway at Muchea. On this last stretch to Gingin a noisy thunderstorm approached from the west, but I was able to get ahead of its path and could see it passing behind me.  ... Read more

Gingin to Lancelin 1990

Gingin to Lancelin, day 2, Tuesday 30 October 1990. From the Lands Dept. map, which did not give the distance from Gingin to Lancelin, I had guessed it at 60-odd km. The night before riding it I increased the estimate to at least 70 km.

I left Gingin at 7:28 on a cold, overcast morning with intermittent drizzle. The wind was strong WSW, against me for half the day’s journey. When I got to the Brand Highway and turned onto the Lancelin Road I had already done 5km and a sign said ‘Lancelin 75km.’ There were going to be 80km, 35 into a headwind and the rest with the aid of the wind backing more SW as the day went on.  ...
