Clarkson to Lancelin Tour 2010, six days, cumulative distance: 285km.

I had not been to Lancelin for 16 years. Previous rides there in 1990 and 1994 had involved long runs, broken spokes, unrideable roads, cramp, bad weather and outdated or inaccurate maps. I planned to start at the extremity of the northern rail line and go to Lancelin, in easy stages of 40 to 50 km a day, staying in different places, then come back via Gingin and possibly Bindoon.

Gingin to Guildford, day 6, Saturday 30 October 2010. I left Gingin at 7:51 on a cool sunny morning with moderate E-NE winds. It was easy to get into a rhythm cycling along and the lack of hills meant that I didn’t lose much energy. Hills take it out of you when you climb and you don’t get it back on the downhill run.

I rested at 294 and the road began to curve around to the east, into the wind, as I passed through Muchea, 305.  ... Read more

Bindoon to Perth, day 7, Sunday 4 November 1990. Left Bindoon at 7:51 on a sunny morning with a fresh south-easterly which was to turn south-westerly later in the day. There were to be significant headwinds all the way. I stopped at Chittering at 20072. The shop had no milk of any sort.

I rested again at 20090, and at 20106 where I watched two model planes being flown in a paddock. They achieved great height and speed. One kept doing the stall routine, where a plane cuts its engine, falls straight down and restarts in time to regain level flight.

At 20110 I turned onto West Swan Road and enjoyed a scenic run through the Swan Valley, but I was suffering increasingly from the constant headwind and various cramps.  ... Read more
