Rotary Hoist
January 29th, 2012
A Hills Hoist is a height-adjustable rotary clothes line, invented in Adelaide, Australia by Lance Hill in 1945. It is distinguished from other rotary clothes lines by a crown and pinion winding mechanism allowing the clothesline to be lowered and raised. Hills Hoist and similar derivatives remain a common fixture in many backyards in Australia and New Zealand. It is considered one of Australia’s most recognisable icons, and is used frequently by artists as a metaphor for Australian suburbia in the 1950s and ’60s.
