Cottesloe to Yealering Tour 2003

Cottesloe to Yealering 2003 – 11 days, 586 km cumulative distance.

The aim of this trip was originally to visit Kulin, not because there is anything special there but because I have never been there and it has always been just out of reach, round the corner, a bit further down the track, but never on my way to or from anywhere on previous rides. As the title implies, another wimp-out occurred and I ended up visiting Yealering again.

I took my digital camera on this trip so it is the best-recorded trip ever. I took 48 pictures, but about a dozen of them were of orchids, reflecting my particular interest.

Wickepin to Yealering, day 6, Saturday 18 October 2003. I left Wickepin at 9:26. It was cold but sunny and the wind was a fresh west to south westerly tailwind. It would have been an ideal day to try for Kulin and had I been able to book into the motel, or had it been a different day of the week with the shops open, I might have gone ahead with that original plan.

I headed up the straight road that led to Kulin, climbing as it did so for some way out of Wickepin, then I turned left to head north to Yealering. The wind was still helping me.

I rested at 1114, at another stone bench and seats beside the road.  ... Read more

Yealering to Corrigin 2003

Yealering to Corrigin, day 7, Sunday 19 October 2003. The day was cool and sunny with west to north-westerly winds backing south-westerly. I got up before 8 and the place was silent, no-one stirred in or outside the hotel.

I went downstairs and started to get a breakfast. I couldn’t find any cutlery anywhere but did locate a couple of teaspoons and made do with them. A cat slept curled up on the kitchen table and a dog wandered quietly in and out. I eventually found some cereal, a couple of crusts of bread in the freezer, a pot of half-used margarine left out of the fridge on one of the dining room tables and a lot of little sachets of jam and marmalade.  ... Midland to Yealering Wheatbelt Tour 1989

Midland to Yealering, 8 day Wheatbelt Tour 1989. Cumulative distance: 512km.

The purpose of this ride was to reach Yealering and come back to Perth by a different route. The original plan of stops was Sawyers Valley – York – Brookton – Yealering, but I found that Sawyers Valley offered no accomodation, so I booked at El Caballo Blanco in Wooroloo instead. This raised the possibility of bypassing York and cutting through back roads to Beverley on Day 2. This would make days 3 and 4 easier.

Pingelley to Yealering 1989

Pingelley to Yealering, Day 4, Friday 27 October 1989. I left Pingelly at 8:04. I couldn’t pay my hotel bill because I couldn’t find anyone anywhere in the place. I resolved to pay by money order later in the trip. It was a lovely cool sunny day with a light breeze that the radio promised would freshen and tend westerly during the day – perfect for the day’s ride.

Nice country, large fields of grain, some forest, lots of wildflowers and birds. I stopped for a rest at 17207km, 17222 and 17237. The last rest was at the intersection, of the straight sealed road that runs due east into Yealering, with the 10km of gravel track which I had taken as a short cut from the main Yealering road.  ... Yealering to Narrogin, Day 5, Saturday 28 October 1989. The Yealering Hotel was the first on this trip, where they were willing to get up at 6:30 am to get me a decent breakfast.

Started riding at 8:07 am, went to look at two things Rosemary had recommended; the old manse built in 1912 and the mural painted by the children at the local school, on the outside of the school library. This shows the lake with some happy faces and in big letters “Yealering Welcomes You”.

Turned onto the Wickepin Road at 8:16 on a fine morning with a moderate north-westerly that helped me until I reached the turn-off to Wickepin. After this I had strengthening headwinds all the way to Narrogin.  ... Read more
